The Return Of The Queen...

After nearly a 12-year hiatus from the music industry, lyrical genius and talent prodigy, Lauryn Hill is back!

(Hill at the Tanzania Education Trust, NYC Gala. April 19, 2010)

Albeit, she reportedly insists that fans -and friends alike- now address her as 'Ms. Lauryn Hill,' she has resurfaced -anew- but with the same legendary, R&B infused, Hip-Hop sound that is -unmistakeably- her signature and trademark.

(Hill at the Harmony Festival. June 13, 2010)

From 1991-1996, Hill was the front woman of the successful rap group The Fugees, under which she recorded two albums with band mates Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel; Blunted on Reality (1994),

and The Score (1996),

which won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

After the group parted ways in 1997, Hill released her debut, solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, in 1998.

Reportedly, the album's title was inspired by -and references- Dr. Carter G. Woodson's book, "The Mis-Education of the Negro,"

as well as Sonny Carson's film -and autobiographical novel- "The Education of Sonny Carson."

Upon its debut, 'Miseducation' topped the Billboard charts for several weeks, and earned Hill a record 10 Grammy Award nominations in 1999 (making her the first female artist ever to receive 10 nominations in one year). Hill's 'Miseducation' won five Grammy Awards, including the coveted Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist; as a result, Hill set ANOTHER record by becoming the first woman ever to win five Grammy Awards in one night! According to wikipedia.org, Hill earned $25 Million Dollars, between 1998 and 1999, from album sales and touring.

(Hill at the 1999 'Grammy' Awards ceremony)

From 2001-2002, after expressing displeasure with the 'workings' of the entertainment business, Hill (by now a reclusive, media-shy, guitar-playing soul-searcher), recorded and released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0,

a live, acoustic album filled with both personal and unfinished material, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts in 2002; in June 2007, Hill -under her new professional name, Ms. Lauryn Hill- released her newest song since 2002, titled "Lose Myself," which appeared on the Surf's Up film soundtrack; and in late July of this year, an unreleased Hill song, titled "Repercussions," leaked onto the Internet and debuted at #94 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Hill has been romantically linked with Rohan Marley (the fourth son of music legend Bob Marley), and together they have five children.

During this summer, between August 21st and 29th, Hill performed as a headlining 'special guest' (alongside Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, et al.), for the Rock The Bells 2010 concert series in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Washington, DC.

(Hill at the 'Rock The Bells' concert series, 2010)

As reported on Hill's website, during her August 28th -Rock The Bells- performance, she was paid respect by Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Chris Rock, Jay-Z, John Legend and Jerry Wonder. After her performance, MTV interviewed Hill and quoted her as saying, "It was wonderful to see everybody. I was so touched." Moreover, the BBC has even reported that First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, said she "frequently listens to Hill's music," on her iPod.

All hail the queen!

New Prep

Lisa Birnbach's handbook gets a face lift at 30.

(Lisa Birnbach, photo by Elena Seibert)

Author of The Official Preppy Handbook (Workman Publishing, 1980),

Birnbach returns -three decades later- with a continuation of the original, True Prep (Knopf, 2010), released -yesterday- September 7th.

A cult-classic among readers, 'Handbook,' has helped to open a gate to the world of the rich and elite, a seemingly elusive 'jet set,' as seen via the likes of the cast on the CW's hit television series Gossip Girl, which (like its character Blair Waldorf), is the definition of prep!

(main cast of the CW's 'Gossip Girl')

Prep, is short for preppy, which is derived from the term 'preparatory school or prep school,' which is a private (non-public), institution of learning, that COSTS A LOT OF MONEY! E.g. The Spence School in New York City, is an independent day school for girls and serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade; one of its famous graduates includes Gwyneth Paltrow.

Moreover, to further explore the world of prep -this time around- Birnbach teamed up with co-author Chip Kidd (a graphic designer), whom she met via Facebook. According to the LA Times, Birnbach said, "Chip showed me what a huge afterlife 'Handbook' had online- people were writing about the book and they sounded like they were in a desert dying for a drink of water. It was like, 'Lisa, please!"

Thus, she has re-surfaced with 'Prep,' to satisfy the thirst of her readers. In this book (which has 12 chapters), Birnbach and Kidd's dedication to clothing revisits brands such as Ralph Lauren (a preppy staple), and highlights new brands such as J.M. Weston (shoes), Vineyard Vines, Kenneth Cole and J. Crew (which was not included in 'Handbook').

(a look by Polo, Ralph Lauren)

In the Times, Birnbach continues to say, "The point I'm trying to make in this book is that yes, you can buy new clothes, but you can also rely on the things you have in your closet... Anything old is preppier than anything new- that's just a rule." Yes, STYLE 101: concurs... as we pillage through our pile of vintage Lacoste and Lanvin... lol... Happy Reading!

Noteworthy taste makers you need to know... now... download and Enjoy!!!

1) Who are you, and what do you plan to accomplish with your talent?
My name is Jason Christopher Peters. I am a fashion designer, model and stylist. I hope to change the world with my innovative and creative fashion designs, and continue to be a positive and inspiring role model for youth and people around the world; I want to be the Donald Trump of the fashion world!

2) When did people start to notice your potential?
When I was 18, my career launched in -both- the fields of fashion design and modeling, even though I started sketching designs at three or four years old. Anna Wintour of VOGUE magazine, Isabel Gonzalez of Teen People magazine, and Anne Slowey of ELLE magazine were the first fashion editors to write to me stating that I had huge potential in the fashion industry, so it happened at a very young age, and it was all very surreal.

3) Where is your career headed next?
I am embarking upon a mini-fashion tour of my debut collections (which kicked-off in August 2010, in St Louis, MO). The first [and second] part of my documentary series was filmed and we are pitching it to networks to become its own reality show. My website, www.jasoncpeters.com (launching this month), is where you will finally be able to purchase my couture! I am continuing to model for designers for Fashion Week and also on a few magazine covers (which come out in the next few months, as well). I just want to conquer every aspect of the fashion industry and change the world!

1) Who are you, and what do you plan to accomplish with your talent?
Hello, I am Taliah Ferguson, owner and creator of the fashion line Taliah Somone (www.taliahsomone.com). I totally plan to accomplish many, crafty talents, now and in the future, by staying original and thinking outside-the-box. I want to have a household name and hopefully ignite my company into a multi-level design company consisting of designing, image consulting, and fashion editing.

2) When did people start to notice your potential?
[Hmmm, good question…] I would have to say in high school, while participating in the fashion shows, and truthfully, involving myself in anything fashion-related (lol). My style sense was unique and fresh, and I guess people caught on to it and deemed me as a fashion designer in the making!

3) Where is your career headed next?
My career is headed to the stars, figuratively and literally. I want to see celebs in my creations or speaking my name when asked who styled them. I plan to continue my dreams of becoming a fashion icon and sharing the style-love from Taliah Somone.
* More information about Taliah Somone can be found on its website, at: www.taliahsomone.com

1) Who are you, and what do you plan to accomplish with your talent?
[I am] the head, high-end fashion designer and owner of the SHY FIGARO Collection (www.shyfigaro.com); co-owner of the Trivia Fashion line (www.triviafahion.com); and Figaro Angel Network (www.figaroangelnetwork.org). I am most widely known as a highly-acclaimed fashion designer and philanthropist in South Florida. [I] seek to create an upscale, inviting, boutique environment that further enhances the SHY FIGARO brand, and build customer loyalty -and demand- for SHY FIGARO merchandise.

2) When did people start to notice your potential?
It was in 2001, while in Anaheim, California, that [I] competed in a fashion design competition and enjoyed it so much that I decided to make a career out of fashion design. Each SF piece radiates elegance and class, while also exuding a degree of edge and confidence. With so many demands and supports while studying pre-med in college, I also took on learning the fashion industry, to prepare the launch of [my] high-end, self-titled fashion line, SHY FIGARO.

3) Where is your career headed next?
[My] career is on the rise; [I] just finished directing my first, feature documentary titled “Designer’s Quest,” [which is] about Haiti’s earthquake, and [the film] will benefit my foundation, the FAN (Figaro Angel Network), [as a way] to help Haiti. Also, after my successful Delray Beach, FL fashion show (held on May 21st, 2010), I was approached for many design opportunities, including a reality-TV show, which I will be working on the pilot [soon].

1) Who are you, and what do you plan to accomplish with your talent?
I am Cyreeta L. Curbeam, owner of Bliss Boutique in Baltimore, MD, -wow- it feels great to say that (lol)! I am a very outgoing person who doesn’t conform to the norm, I believe that Bliss is an extension of me in that regard, and because of that, Bliss Boutique has taken the city by surprise (since its doors opened on June 24, 2010). When people think of boutiques, they think high-end price-points for one-of-a-kind, avant-garde pieces that they’ll only wear once, or twice. At Bliss, we push the envelope of that perception by offering a range of contemporary fashions at affordable prices. With our eclectic collection of items, ladies are able to shop for everyday wear, summer vacations or for special events and still get a little taste of exclusivity because we have limited quantities. What more could a girl ask for? We plan to use this strategy to become the 18 to 32-year-old fashionista’s number one choice for clothing, jewelry and accessories.

2) When did people start to notice your potential?
From day one, Bliss guests have noticed that we aren’t the typical boutique, primarily because people aren’t just customers to us (they are guests), and we treat them as such. If we’re offering them a seat and bringing clothes to them while they relax, or getting them a beverage, or even probing them about what’s already in their closet -that would go well with that one signature item we offer- and allow them to shop smart and stick to their budget, each guest gets the attention they deserve. Whether they’ve found an ensemble for a special occasion or a pair of earrings to wear daily, each guest leaves having found her bliss!

3) Where is your career headed next?
In the realm of future additions, we plan to kick-it-up a notch, by offering brands such as Steve Madden apparel and a moderately-sized collection of shoes. Also, designer tees and jackets for guys are a strong possibility in the coming months. More information will be provided on our web site, at www.blissbaltimore.net, or in-store, at 4419 Kenwood Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21206.

walking tall

Runway tween 'Diva Davanna' makes strides, but if her height was as big as her walk, she'd be all over the world, by now!

Davanna (a twin), first made headlines -almost seven years ago- when viral videos of her pumping and sashaying (in numerous fashion shows), hit the Internet; the YouTube downloads were incessant. She debuted alongside her sister in a small-scale runway event (so as not to be outdone by her sibling), and quickly became interested in the worlds of fashion and modeling.

Fast-forward to present day, and the consummate professional, Davanna (who turns 11-years-old on November 30th), has become an overnight success, even having appeared on heavyweight, talk show host Tyra Banks' eponymous, daytime program, where she wowed both Banks and the audience with her elegant strut (wearing custom-made clothing by her fabulous personal stylist/make-up artist/runway coach, Mr. Timotheous J. Smart).

Davanna's career is overseen by her mother (after all, she's still a pre-teen), and all modeling assignments are strictly booked through Sheila Foxx. You can catch Davanna making headlines -again- later this year, in a feature story on My9 News Network; as well, Davanna was an invited guest to two tapings of the new season of BRAVO TV's The Fashion Show (with host Isaac Mizrahi and supermodel Iman). Moreover, if you think the hype over Davanna is too much, you don't have to take our word for it... see for yourself:

Zoë Saldana, Thandie Newton, et al. sign cosmetic deals... and here's a look at them being bold and beautiful!

Thandie Newton for Olay

In addition to Carrie Underwood becoming the new, U.S. Brand Ambassador for skincare giant Olay, the company has also -recently- named Newton as its Brand Ambassador in the United Kingdom.

Speaking with an Olay team member, it was verified (as also reported on graziadaily.co.uk), that, Newton will be the face of Olay's Total Effects product line.

Responding to the announcement, Newton said, "When filming, my working day is hectic, so trying to strike a balance between work, a family and time for myself can be challenging... Olay is a brand I trust and I love the fact that the range offers me an all-in-one, anti-ageing moisturiser which takes care of all my skincare needs." Olay chimed in, saying, "Thandie's pragmatic approach to a beauty routine ensures her skincare is as multi-tasking as she is."

Zoë Saldana for Avon

After having starred in the HIGHEST grossing film of-all-time, "Avatar" (20th Century Fox, 2009), Saldana has found a way to lend her beauty to more than just an IMAX screen. Earlier this year, it was reported that beauty company Avon had recruited Saldana to be the face of their Eternal Magic fragrance.

Geralyn Breig (Senior Vice President and President of Avon North America), said, "We are thrilled to have Zoë as the spokesperson for Eternal Magic. Every woman wants to be unforgettable and Zoë perfectly embodies that feeling. She's a rising star in Hollywood and has built a strong reputation for playing empowering characters that leave a lasting impression... We were drawn to her inner and outer beauty, and feel she represents the perfect combination of strength and femininity." Saldana responded, saying, "I'm very proud to be working with Avon and to be the face of Eternal Magic... it means so much to me to be associated with a company that shares my values and believes in empowering women."

Keri Hilson for Avon

Being knocked down -apparently- is not in Hilson's vocabulary. Since recording her debut album, she has been on the move and making industry connections at every turn; now, it's her turn to front a worldwide cosmetics brand.

This year, in addition to Saldana becoming a spokesmodel for Avon, Hilson was also tapped by the company! Bob Briddon (Group Vice President, Marketing, Avon North America), says, "We are thrilled to have her on board as the face of Imari and our Color collection. Keri embodies everything the Avon woman aspires to be... beauty, grace, confidence and success."

Hilson replied, saying, "I'm so excited and honored to be Avon's newest face, [they have] always been dedicated to empowering women through beauty. I've always strived to do the same with my music. To be a part of that experience means a tremendous amount to me."

* Video (Keri Hilson for Avon, 2010)

Zoë Kravitz for Vera Wang

Her father (Lenny Kravitz), sang "Let Love Rule," but the younger Kravitz shows that she was born to rule, pictured in Wang's advertisements for the fragrance Princess and Glam Princess.

Not one to rest on her beauty (or family name), Kravitz proves that her talent is better fitted for the big screen; she's appeared on film -alongside Jodie Foster- in "The Brave One" (Redemption Pictures, 2007), and she's currently filming a new installment to the "X-Men" series.
