FASHION IN THE BUFF

Designer Marc Jacobs takes it all off to promote his new fragrance... and this isn't the first time he's in the buff!!!

Early last year, Jacobs stripped down for fashion, in the January 2009 issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine.

Posing alongside his infamous Louis Vuitton "Sprouse" bag, Jacobs undressed to promote the release of The Stephen Sprouse Book (Rizzoli, 2009), in honor of the late artist.

Sprouse (a dear friend and longtime collaborator of Jacobs), helped the Vuitton brand skyrocket to success with his street-inspired graffiti being superimposed over top the classic LV monogram.

Most recently, Jacobs -again- found his way out of clothing, this time as a campaign model for his very own men's fragrance "BANG."

BANG will be released late July at Bloomingdale's and Marc Jacobs stores nationwide.

EYES ON THE PRIZE

Mary J. Blige introduces her exclusive eyewear collection "Melodies by MJB," in a joint collaboration with Orange 21 Inc.

Orange 21 is a Southern California eyewear company that designs, manufactures and sells sunglasses under the Spy Optic, Margaritaville and O'Neill labels, and has been manufacturing and distributing high quality eyewear since 1994. This deal (brokered by Interscope Geffen A&M Records' Chairman Jimmy Iovine), will help Blige develop and distribute her own line of fashion sunglasses, to be released in the Fall of 2010.

The first Melodies by MJB collection will feature four styles with a total of 20 color options, each unique style will represent a specific facet of Blige's life; select retail partners for Melodies by MJB will be announced in the near future. A second, more extensive, collection will launch in Spring 2011.

Blige, a music icon, has won nine Grammy Awards and has sold more than 40 million albums (worldwide), yet Iovine says, "To reach out beyond music, an artist has to become involved with something they're already associated with and truly feel passionate about and not just stick their name on someone else's product. As her fans know, Mary loves fashion and she especially loves sunglasses, making Melodies by MJB a natural fit for her."

dirty water

The Gulf Coast oil spill continues to wreak havoc and still remains unconfined.

On April 20,2010, an oil rig leased by British Petroleum (BP PLC), exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and killed 11 workers.

President Barack Obama visited Caminada Bay in Grand Isle, Louisiana, on Friday, June 4th, and of his visit said, "this spill has not just damaged livelihoods. It has upended whole communities. And the fury people feel is not just about the money they have lost. It is about the wrenching recognition that this time their lives may never be the same."

President Barack Obama, with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal- New Orleans

While there, Obama met with a group of local residents and small business owners at Camerdelle's Live Bait shop, where people like Floyd Lasseigne (a fourth-generation oyster fisherman), and Terry Vegas (a shrimper), shared similar stories. Obama went on record to further say, "These people work hard. They meet their responsibilities. But now because of a man made catastrophe -- one that is not their fault and beyond their control -- their lives have been thrown into turmoil. It is brutally unfair. And what I told these men and women is that I will stand with the people of the Gulf Coast until they are again made whole."

On June 16th, BP agreed to set up a $20 billion escrow fund (over a four-year period), to pay claims stemming from the oil spill, and will contribute $100 million to support jobless oil rig workers. Today, the White House's administration says, "there are more than 20,000 people, 17,500 National Guard troops, and 1,900 vessels," participating in the response to aide, contain and cleanup the oil spill.

Let's hope it works...

Remembering A Star

Lena Horne's light still shines, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of arts and entertainment.

American singer, actress, dancer and civil rights activist, Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was born on June 30, 1917, and died on May 9, 2010; she passed away at the age of 92, in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

Horne's illustrious career began in 1933, at the age of sixteen, when she had to drop out of high school to take care of her ailing mother. At night, she would leave the house and sing blues and jazz songs with the chorus at New York's Cotton Club. She quickly became a popular act and began touring the states with several other musical bands, until she broke out on her own in the early 1940's.

Wikipedia.org reports that in 1942, Horne "became the first Black performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio," by joining with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her film debut was in Panama Hattie (1942), and she also performed the title song of Stormy Weather (1943).

Although she battled racism and extreme, unfair practices in Hollywood (even being 'blacklisted' for her political voice), Horne remained a staunch Civil Rights Activist, and her career went on to span 50+ years in the entertainment industry. Horne holds the record for the longest-running solo performance in Broadway history (333 stage performances), for her one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. In 1981, Horne received a Special Tony Award and two Grammy Awards for the show, and in 1989, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, for her astonishing career.

As of 2005, it was reported that Oprah Winfrey had considered producing a biopic of Horne's life and intended to cast Alicia Keys as the starlet, yet, no new information has surfaced about the project.

Horne leaves behind one daughter (Gail Lumet Buckley, a best-selling author), two granddaughters (Amy and Jenny Lumet; Jenny wrote the screenplay for "Rachel Getting Married" 2008, and both are the daughters of acclaimed film director Sidney Lumet, "The Wiz" 1978), and several great-grandchildren.

We here at STYLE 101: remember Lena Horne's spirit, and we honor her legacy... May God Bless And Rest Her Soul.
