Not only has Kanye West teamed up with Jay-Z for their recent, album project, "Watch The Throne," Mr. West has also teamed up with France... choosing its fashion capital Paris, for the debut of his ready-to-wear, women's collection.
For the Spring/Summer 2012 season, West presented a small number of garments before a small number of people. The invitation contained the initials DW, which clues us into the label possibly being named after his late mother, Donda West...
Either way, the real hunt for information comes not in the form of the label, but in the form of the CLOTHES!!!!!!
A lot of the industry was found speechless after West's recent, runway debut... Style.com, correspondent Tim Blanks says, "...conquering his new medium is a work in progress." Blanks also reported that in attendance at West's debut was "...Azzedine Alaïa, Dean and Dan Caten, Olivier Theyskens, Jeremy Scott, and the Olsens," and in attaining hard-core fashion advice, West consulted with "Kim Jones, Louise Goldin, Katie Eary, and Louise Wilson (the guiding light of Central Saint Martins)."
Further examining West's collection, Women's Wear Daily reported, "It had the earnest veneer of a beginner, which was sort of endearing." And according to a few interviews done by Eric Wilson (reporting for the New York Times), here are a few more industry weigh-ins... Carine Roitfeld says, "I’m sure he knows what he did wrong and what he did right ... He tried hard, and he wants to learn."
Joe Zee says, "If you get it all right on the first shot, where do you go from there?" And, last but not least, the fashion queen, Anna Wintour said, "Ask someone else."
In a backstage interview, West said, "The biggest hurdle I had to face is the celebrity designer or the hip-hop designer concept." But, instead of taking inventory of what everyone else is saying, why don't YOU be the judge, for yourself... take a look:
