Designer Spotlight x Yves Saint Laurent

YVES SAINT LAURENT
(August 1, 1936 – June 1, 2008)

(MONSIEUR YVES SAINT LAURENT, the designer)

The house that Yves built, did not come easy nor did it happen overnight... but longtime, master couturier Yves Saint Laurent left a lasting legacy that millions of people are very familiar with.

YVES SAINT LAURENT LOVED FASHION... And as it was written, in 1957, at the age of 21, Laurent got his first MAJOR fashion job by succeeding Christian Dior as head designer of Dior's label (chosen by Monsieur Dior, after having been a trusty design assistant for a few years). During 1960, Laurent entered the French military, but only served a short period of time before being discharged.

After the military, Laurent returned home, left his post at Dior and began designing his own, eponymous YSL label.

Upon opening his fashion house, Laurent often made risqué choices within the fashion industry... casting a majority of Black models in his shows... to even posing nude for his first, men's fragrance!

Throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's, Laurent's brand became synonymous with luxury and glamour, and the YSL emblem covered everything from handbags, to sunglasses, to cigarette boxes, etc.
(YVES SAINT LAURENT, cigarettes)

Due to Laurent's deteriorating health and purported financial problems (leading up to and after his death), the YSL label has been creatively overseen by notable fashion designers, such as Alber ElbazTom Ford and Stefano Pilati.

In 2002, Yves Saint Laurent took his last bow at the end of the runway, and in 2008, Monsieur Laurent bid adieu to the world... R.I.P!

Daily Dude x LeBron James

DAILY DUDE:

Today's male inspiration comes from LeBron James!

FRESH on the heels of the NBA's recent announcement to "resume" this year's basketball season (with games starting around Christmas day), we caught wind of King James' fashion news; the NBA superstar is set to open a new, men's wear, clothing store in December 2011.

James' boutique is titled "Unknwn," which is a modern-day-text-shorthand-abbreviation for the obviously-implied word, unknown.
Regularly appearing stylish -off the basketball court- James was recently spotted, front row (seated next to W magazine's Editor in Chief, Stefano Tonchi), at the Michael Bastian Spring/Summer 2012 collection, for New York Fashion Week.

Moreover, James was quoted in GQ magazine as saying that, now, there's "...a reason to be in the front row," and rightfully so, as he may additionally wear the hat of a Fashion Buyer, competing with the likes of Bendel's, Saks, et al., in attempt(s) to solicit fashion design merchandise for his new clientele.

There's no word yet, as to why James chose the name "Unknwn" for his store and/or who his target customer will be... but, he's rumored to already be making purchases for the store (3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, Mark McNary, etc.), and supposedly teaming up with business partner, Jaron Kanfer and designer Chris Julian, to ensure that the merchandise is HOT!!!

STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFO. ON THIS DAILY DUDE...

It happens every year... each time, around the Thanksgiving holiday season... No, we're not talking about the holiday itself, rather the enjoyment of pre-Black Friday shopping at mass-retailer, H&M!!!

This time last year, the Swedish retailer, Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), teamed up with Lanvin designer, Alber Elbaz, to create unique, 1-of-a-kind pieces that attracted the couture-loving customer that doesn't have the couture budget.
Yet, for this go-round, Versace mink-tress, Donatella Versace was tapped to "rev up" the fashion finds at their global stores.

Offerings include studded and embossed leather jackets, Versace-patterned print tights/skirts/dresses and jackets, along with shoes and accessories for both men and women:

The Very Best of Versace for H&M, will be available to customers, starting Saturday, November 19th, 2011.

Fashion Was Here... 1 Year Later

*EXCLUSIVE* by Avon Dorsey

On Wednesday, November 16th, 2011, STYLE 101: was invited to a very, Very, VERY special event, celebrating the "Bloggerversary" of my dearly beloved friend/sister/everything-to-me, Ms. Taliah Ferguson.

Ferguson, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for 15+ years, was enjoying an evening filled with family, friends, food and fun, all in the name of fashion... well, in the name of her blog, FASHION WAS HERE!!!
(Taliah Ferguson, Founder of FashionWasHere.net)
A multitude of stylish heavyweights, such as Xem Van AdamsThe Fab EmpireTy Brown from Iconography Magazine and T.M. Hessler, showed up to support Ferguson's ultra-chic, online destination.

Knowing, firsthand, of Ferguson's methodical, fashion talents, I have literally witnessed her blossom from high-school fashionista (wearing neon-colored Kenneth Cole pumps BEFORE everyone else), to a W Magazine-trained glamorista (rocking the latest Mulberry and RayBan BEFORE everyone else)!!!

CHEERS to a most-fabulous fashionista.... HAPPY BLOGGERVERSARY TALIAH!!!!!
