WELCOME TO CLASS...

London's bridge...

The New Men's Wear

It all started with just a dream... that quickly became a reality; in the world of fashion, that is.

London has always played the part of fashion purveyor (since the early days of street-punk and mod apparel), yet when it comes to the seasonal, fashion calendar, it always seems that London has gotten the short-end of the stick -literally- receiving far fewer days of designer showcasing, than its other capital counterparts (i.e. New York, Paris and Milan). In September of 2011, London only received five days of shows, leaving many exhibitors infuriated; British designer, Alice Temperley, notably stated (in an interview with the UK's Telegraph), "London Fashion Week is too short. It's so creative here, whereas New York's more commercial, but London needs more days. New York, Milan and Paris are all longer than here and that must change..."

So, with a surprising twist of fate, and with the guidance of British GQ's Dylan Jones, London got a new, bargaining tool, its own Men's Fashion Week (to coincide with the popular, men's collections shown in Paris and Milan). The inaugural showcase kicked off with a huge fete, hosted by HRH Prince Charles of Wales (a staunch supporter of English Wool), and re-ignited more interest in men's fashion, on a global scale.

My favourite showing was from one of London's University of the Arts graduates, Robert Ventura Gibson, whose collection was entitled, The Secret Boys Club.

Gibson pulled inspiration from masonic, structural motifs and 90's, television shows, he told British, fashion blog, It's Nice That, "I kinda fell into doing fashion, I’d love to say I wanted to do it since I was a kid but I’d be lying. I’m not someone who’s really strong at structural pattern cutting and crazy shapes, I’m a bit of a traditionalist and I guess I want to design clothes that I can show my mum and she’ll understand what’s going on and not wonder what I was doing at uni for seven years."

Well, judging from the looks of things (Gibson's collection included), London will have a lot more to offer on the international, fashion scene, and I can't wait to see more!
