RiRi vs. K-Stew

Not so much a match-up, as it was a mash-up... This week, two of our favorite girls, RiRi (b.k.a Rihanna), and K-Stew (b.k.a Bella Swan, a.k.a Kristen Stewart, lol), were seen -in two different parts of the world- wearing similar ensembles!
Rihanna, wearing a black, emblem'd skull cap,
with a black, leather, bomber jacket.
(Photographed in London. June 21st, 2012)

Kristen Stewart, wearing a logo'd, skull cap,
with a green, bomber jacket.
(Photographed in Australia. June 21st, 2012)

Was it mere happenstance (same day, same style), or were these two chicks thinking along the same, fashion wavelength?! You be the judge...

Enjoy, xoxo!!!

Yves, no more...

SAINT LAURENT, PARIS

Sooo, it's official... The LEGENDARY house of Yves Saint Laurent, will be undergoing a massive change... starting with the name. I have always, completely LOVED Monsieur Yves for his previous accomplishments in fashion, and for how he has inspired LEGIONS of fans, all over the world... (READ OUR YSL REPORT, HERE)!

(Yves Saint Laurent)

Since earlier this year (March 2012), Stefano Pilati no longer designs for the brand; he's been replaced by Hedi Slimane, a former YSL alum.
(Hedi Slimane)

Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Slimane on the streets of New York (during Fashion Week), but never in a million years, would I imagine that he'd change the name of such an iconic, fashion label?!?! Although it doesn't sound too bad, the house will now be called Saint Laurent Paris (which could commonly be mistaken for a bridge label or secondary line). I guess, I'm more upset of the impending dis-association of the brand with Monsieur Yves' original vision, although the house says that it will still, continue to use the famous 'YSL' moniker/logo; the 'Y' will be dropped, and a 'P' will be added at the end.
(YSL moniker/logo)

In the future, we can expect to see SLP, instead of YSL... Women's Wear Daily has reported on the issue (read the full story here).

*stay tuned for more details*

Zombie ATTACKS!!!

OMG!!!

(Morgan State University student,
Alexander Kinyua. Baltimore, Maryland
(Harford County), Police photo. 2012)

When you read headlines like this, “Human remains, specifically a head and hands, were recovered on the main floor of the residence,” you'd think it was a line from a horror/slasher film, right?! ...Not something in real life!

But, unbelievably so, the aforementioned words are what Baltimore City Sheriff, L. Jesse Bane of Harford County, said recently, about the murder of Morgan State University student, Kujoe Agyei-Kodie.

Agyie-Kodie (a native of Ghana), was a graduate student at Morgan State (pursuing a doctoral degree), and was reported missing by family and friends, on May 25th, 2012. The family of the home in which he was staying, called police, after finding what they believed were human remains in the basement of the house; the remains were being handled -in metal tins- by Alexander Kinyua, a fellow, Morgan State University student (a native of Kenya).

When police were called to the scene, Sheriff Bane says, Kinyua "admitted to killing our missing person, Mr. Kodie, and cutting him up with a knife.” According to reports, Kinyua's brother and father were the ones who notified local authorities after questioning him on the contents of the metal tins. The sheriff's department confirmed finding scattered, human remains inside the home and inside of a trash dump at a nearby church; police added that there was 'no remorse' shown by Kinyua. Although the FBI has been called-in to investigate this case, Kinyua's motive for killing Agyie-Kodie (in addition to eating portions of his heart and brain), is still unclear.

Kinyua was arrested and charged with 1st degree murder, just days after being released -on bail- for brutally attacking another, Morgan State student on campus (with a baseball bat), the same day as Morgan State's commencement program, on May 19th, 2012.

Moreover, Kinyua's case of cannibalism is just as bizarre and gruesome as the May 26th, 2012, attack in Miami, Florida, where Rudy Eugene strolled -nude- alongside a busy highway and eventually chewed off portions of a homeless man, Ronald Poppo's face. Eugene was allegedly drugged (via bath salts), and had his vehicle towed, moments before going on a violent rampage. In regards to Eugene's drugged state, Head of the Miami Police, Armando Aguilar said, "We have seen... cases that are exactly like this... people have all taken their clothing off, been extremely violent with what seemed to be super-human strength, even using their jaws as weapons."

For me, the Baltimore, Maryland incident hits close to home because I am an alumni of Morgan State University, and for the past two days of my re-visiting the campus, I have heard 1st-hand accounts of people's interactions with Kinyua. Morgan students and staff (who choose to remain anonymous), have told me that Kinyua was rather quiet on campus, but that there were moments -in classroom settings- when he would randomly have outbursts and disturb lectures; and as a dormitory resident, he even damaged school property and was dismissed from the school's ROTC-Army program.

Kinyua's reported expulsion from the school (after his ROTC meltdown and May 19th attack), is believed to have been the trigger for his murdering Agyie-Kodie. My learning of this startling situation has thrown me for a loop, because these types of things only happen in the movies, right?! You would never expect it to happen in your own backyard.

Therefore, it's my hope that this type of press does not reflect poorly on Morgan State University (as a whole), but that it opens up the conversation of mental illness and warning signs for human, erratic behavior. I truly pray for those families that are involved with these cases, because these are both, severely-tragic incidents! You just never know... God Bless Us All.

The CFDA's Model Stance...

WHAT MAKES A MODEL HEALTHY?!

Celebrating 50 years, and also on the eve of their annual, Awards showcase (which takes place this year, on Tuesday, June 5th at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall), I thought it apropo to take a second look at the CFDA's stance on health initiatives for models working within the fashion industry!

Back in January, CFDA President, Diane Von Furstenberg issued an industry-wide email, which included a set of 'guidelines' for models being booked for New York Fashion Week... these were her words:
"The guidelines recommend that models be asked for i.d. to ensure that they are at least 16 years old on the day of a show and that you avoid having models under the age of eighteen to work past midnight at fittings. On behalf of The Model Alliance (http://modelalliance.org) we also encourage you to consider model privacy and to have the photographers cleared for first looks.
"Top modeling agencies – including DNA, Elite, Ford, IMG, Marilyn, New York Models, Next, One, Supreme, Trump, Wilhelmina, Women and Women Direct – have again pledged that they will not send out models under the age of 16 for shows. The industry must work together to support this and insist that models show i.d. to casting agents or to someone on the production team. Any model walking in the Diane von Furstenberg runway will have shown i.d. prior to the show.

"We do impact the lives of women and we can set a strong example of a well balanced life on our runways."

When I heard about this, I applauded Von Furstenberg and those working with her -and the CFDA- for taking a stance on such issues, and I think that it's always great to continue spreading good news such as this!

Moreover, I personally feel as though ALL MODELS (male and female), should be at least '18 years old,' before they begin working in the fashion industry, because -to me- 18 is the age when they should be done with high-school, at a peak developmental level (physically), and are considered to be 'of age' by most state and federal regulations... and it only makes sense! But again, everyone doesn't think the same way that I do; I digress!

Even though there might be a few models who are 'younger than 18,' that might have great and outstanding potential in the industry, we -as professionals- should utilize those tender years (between the ages of 16-18 years old, if we must), to develop the model... and once they turn 18, and are done with high-school, THEN send them out into the world.

...Or maybe it's just me?! LOL... Either way, God Bless Us All, xoxo!

***The yearlong celebration of the CFDA’s 50th Anniversary kicked off in February with the exhibition opening at the Museum at F.I.T. titled IMPACT: Fifty Years of the CFDA and the companion book IMPACT: 50 Years of the Council of Fashion Designers of America which explores the impact of America’s most influential designers over the last five decades.
