WELCOME TO CLASS...

86th Academy Awards

RAZZLE, DAZZLE, GLITZ & GLAM...

At this year's annual, Academy Awards ceremony, the producers got it right; not only was Ellen DeGeneres the perfect choice as host for the show, the staging and the production value -itself- was above par!

From the fine selection of films and actors being nominated, to seeing the favorites actually win (and win BIG), made for a phenomenal, live telecast. Music performers included Pharrell Williams, P!nk and Karen O. (from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs!), and the big winners were the epic film, 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong'o (Best Actress in a Supporting Role), Jared Leto (Best Actor in a Supporting Role), Matthew McConaughey (Best Actor in a Lead Role) and Cate Blanchett (Best Actress in a Lead Role).

Speaking of Ellen, one of the standout moments included her record-breaking, Twitter upload of a 'selfie' (group photo), that garnered more than 1M retweets, and shut down the website for a few minutes due to high-traffic.

Other record-breaking moments included the aforementioned winner of Best Picture, 12 Years a Slave, which is an adaptation (Oscar winning, adapted screenplay via John Ridley), of a free-born, Black man (Solomon Northup's) telling of how he was kidnapped, bought and sold into slavery and how it not only affected him and his family, but how he saw the adverse affects on countless other Blacks (freed or un-freed).

Moreover, the fact that 12 Years..., won, is a nod in the right direction for this country (and the world), to -in a sense- finally be able to acknowledge, or at least, creatively approach/digest the accounts of enslavement. Sure, we've had Django Unchained, Roots and other films of the like, but this particular film is important because it is not just a screenplay, nor a skewed attempt at making a 'slave movie,' it is the first-hand telling of enslavement, from a Black man, adapted by a Black man (John Ridley), directed by a Black man (Steve McQueen), and all paid for by a White man (Brad Pitt).

Overall, The Academy got it right, this year, so hats off to them, and cheers (again), to all of the fabulous nominees and winners!!! God Bless You!
